INDIANAPOLIS - The 58th Annual NHRA U.S. Nationals Drag Racing was held at Lucas Oil Raceway. Prior to the Labor Day weekend, the race was plagued with rain and the elimination rounds were cancelled on Sept. 3 and rerun on the following weekend with a limited number of cars able to return.
Super Stock started with a field of 166 cars and only 64 returned the following week. Super Stock normally allowed 128 cars to race out of the 166, but due to the rainout NHRA allowed all the cars to return and race.
Dave Dailey of East Liverpool won two rounds of Super Gas with times of 9.95 and 9.94 at 148 mph. His 1948 went too fast in the third round at 9.82 E.T. at 139.53 mph. His competitor ran 9.909 at 155.51 mph. The objective in Super Gas is to run as close as possible to a time of 9.90 seconds for the quarters mile race. Gary Agon from Greenwood, Ind., assisted Dave.

Richard Feldman of East Liverpool qualified in the 108th spot with a time of 11.418 at 115.86 mph. In his '66 Chevy Impala in ss/o class. NHRA has a new system for single car classes in which all the single cars will race each other using the national index as a handicap and no break out rule. Richard raced a ss/vx 1953 VW Bug from Whittier, Calif. The VW had an index of 11.60 against Richard's 12.20 index. Richard lost the round with a red light start of minus-.005. A perfect light is .000. Richard was unable to return the following week.
Rick Brown, formerly of East Palestine, qualified number 37 in competition eliminator with his B/TA S10 truck, posting a time of 8.334 E.T. on an index of 8.78. Rick lost in the first round of the rerun race. John Frech of Cortland, Ohio, returned with his 4 cyl. Dragster and won 2 rounds of comp eliminator. His F/Dragster ran times of 8.116.
Ford, Chevy and Chrysler have begun promoting stock and super stock cars with Chevy introducing a new cops Camaro. One example is a 2012 Camaro in superstock class SSA/A using a 327 cubic inch engine posting a time of 8.667 on a 9.70 index. Jeg Coughlin Jr. raced in A/SA Chrysler in Stock Class, running times of 10.121 for the quarter. He lost in round 5 with a red light start of minus-.005.
Top Fuel was won by Troy Schumacher with an E.T. of 3.806 at 315.34 mph for the 1,000 foot track. Mike Neff won Funny Car at 4.079 at 311.05 mph. Pro Scock was won by Dave Connally defeating Erica Endors with a better reaction time. .015 to .026 for Erica. Dave ran an E.T. of 6.589 against Erica's 6.580. Dave's speed was 210.05 mph.
Several local racers planned to attend Jeg's Northern Sport's Nationals this weekend (Sept. 21-23) at National Trail Raceway in Columbus.
