Our liberties

September 16, 2012
The Review

Dear Editor:

There are governments in this country which want to tell us which light bulbs to buy, at $50 each, and put a limitation on the size of flat screen TV we can purchase. This is a bigger deal than it appears at first.

Our liberties will not be taken away in large chunks, but in tiny incremental slivers. It reminds me of the oriental torture called The Death of a Thousand Cuts. How dare the government tell us what light bulbs to buy? Where in the Constitution has the government been granted this power?

Remember, the Bill of Rights is a misnomer, it is not a grant of rights, but rather a limitation of federal power. These limitations of power were so obvious to the founding fathers they didn't think of putting them in the Constitution.

Our natural rights, according to Jefferson in the preamble to the Declaration of Independence, comes from the creator and not from the federal or any other government. Do not let our government take away our rights by slivers. We should remember that we should not be afraid of our government - our government should be afraid of us.
