NEW MANCHESTER - The Hancock County Animal Shelter is offering cats for adoption at half the normal rate through the end of September.
The reduced adoption fee for cats 1 year old or older is $37.50, and the cats are available at the Gas Valley Road shelter or the Robinson Township, Pa., Petsmart.
"Our cats are fixed, have their shots, and are wormed and flea treated," said shelter spokesman Tom Goff. "All you add is love."
The cut-rate adoptions are being offered to help the shelter reduce the seasonal influx of cats, said shelter Director Lorrie Byo.
"Beginning in early summer and extending into fall, we've been seeing increased cat intakes," Byo said. "In the last week of August alone, we took in 32 cats."
All adoptions are subject to the standard adoption process, which includes a screening and the provision of a veterinary reference. Goff said the shelter has the right to refuse any adoption.
Shelter hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and Sunday by appointment.
