Bernard W. "Ben" Burkle

NEWELL-Bernard W. "Ben" Burkle, 86 of Newell, passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 after becoming suddenly ill at home.

He was born on April 19, 1926 in Wheeling to the late Bernard and Berenice Burkle.

Ben was a veteran of the US Navy serving in both WWII on a LST in the Pacific Theater and also during the Korean War on an attach transport.

An avid golfer, Ben was most proud of holding the course record at the Waterford Park nine hole course, eight under par for nine holes. He also had eight holes in one during his golf career.

Ben was retired as the owner and operator of the W.T. Burkle Turf Supply at the former Waterford Park Race Track.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic where he served as head usher. He was a graduate of Wheeling Catholic Central High School and he belonged to the East Liverpool Elks Lodge.

Preceding him in death were three sisters, Ellen Zeit, Joan Kelly, and Nancy Callan.

His loving wife Margaret L. Burkle whom he married on October 27, 1951 survives at home.

Also surviving are three sons, Bill Burkle of Morriston, Fla.; Jim Burkle of East Liverpool, and Ed Burkle of Chester, one daughter, Nancy Burkle of Cleveland, one sister, Sister Berenice Burkle of Wheeling, and three grandchildren, Kayla Stephenson, Mary Pat Statler and Mathew Statler.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Father Eric Antwi presiding. Entombment will follow at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell. The family will be present to receive friends tonight at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester from 6-8 p.m.
