EAST LIVERPOOL - More than 30 gift baskets and items have been collected to be auctioned at the East Liverpool Dog Walk scheduled to begin at noon Sept. 8 at Thompson Park.

Chairman Rachele Tatgenhorst said the baskets have a variety of themes and contain a wide variety of items, including wine, pet supplies, children's toys and gift cards.

Various veterinarians, pet supply stores and boarding/grooming facilities have donated items for the baskets, including a free spay/neuter, flea-tick-heartworm preventatives, dog beds, boarding and more.

Other vendors registered for the day will be selling Avon, Pittsburgh Steelers' memorabilia, homemade pet treats, pet clothing, baked goods and pet photos, and the police officers' wives will have a concession stand.

There will be kids' activities, and DJ Rylan Childs will be providing music throughout the day.

Special mugs with Dog Walk logos have been produced by local pottery W.C. Bunting, and they will be filled with coffee free by Coffee, Tea & Fusion, who will be selling a variety of beverages.

Salem Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 88 has also donated a bicycle to be auctioned off during the day, and a special dog-themed cake and dog-themed floral arrangement will be auctioned, as well.

The main event, however, will be the dog walk, in which walkers are urged to seek sponsors for their dogs, with proceeds from the $10 entry fee and sponsor fees to benefit the city police department's efforts to purchase a dog for a K-9 unit.

Anyone who doesn't register ahead of time can do so at the event, with Tatgenhorst encouraging them to come a little earlier than the noon starting time so they can complete the necessary paperwork.

During the walk, mystery judges will be choosing their favorite dogs in a variety of categories, including best behaved, friendliest and most ornery. Dogs will also be given complimentary gifts during the day.

In addition to the walk and Chinese auction, the day will feature demonstrations by Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation K-9 officer Bo and St. Clair Township Police K-9 Axel and their handlers, as well as a demonstration by a Hubbard training center on obedience and Frisbee catching.

With warm weather promised, pet owners can also bring their dogs to the park that day for a bath, nail trimming and ear cleaning.

Custom-made K-9 shirts and bandannas will be sold, and the Humane Society of Columbiana County will bring adoptable dogs so that those who wish to walk but who have no dog of their own can "borrow" one for the day or a lifetime.

The auction and 50-50 raffle will be held at Pavilion No. 1, where a used book sale will also take place. Anyone wishing to donate books to the sale can bring them that day.

Registration forms and sponsor sheets are available in the lobby outside the city police department or by sending in the $10 per dog/walker donation to: E.L. Patrolmen's Association, 126 West Sixth Street, East Liverpool, Ohio, 43920.

The two dogs with the most sponsors will receive a goody basket.

Tagenhorst can be reached for more information or to donate books at 330-843-8576.
