Farmer's market going strong since move to Wellsville

August 10, 2012

WELLSVILLE-As many local residents already know, there will be a farmer's market held this Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the old Sky Bank parking lot on Main Street in Wellsville. The reason why this will occur is the persistence of market organizers Elaine Hissom and Jack Clutter.

Following new mandates adopted this past April by the city health board in East Liverpool to regulate farmer's markets, Clutter, who co-managed the market at its former Broadway Wharf location, decided to move the event to what he felt would be a more welcoming atmosphere. Since re-establishing the event in Wellsville in June, market days have been held every Saturday since, with three cancellations due to this summer's intermittent extreme heat and one meeting rained out.

Via telephone, Clutter said the new farmer's market in Wellsville has, weather notwithstanding, been a great success. "It's building up bigger every Saturday," he said enthusiastically. He complimented Wellsville Mayor Susan Haugh and administrator Thom Edgell for their assistance in securing a location for the Market and for their overall cooperation with the event.

"They're treating us like we're part of the city," Clutter said.

Five vendors are lined up for this Saturday, according to Clutter, selling home-grown produce and hand-made craft items. He said that market patrons could anticipate more produce for sale from local growers whose fruits and vegetables will be entering their harvest phase soon.

Clutter said space is available for several more vendors. "We're looking for backyard farmers," he said, as well as local craftspeople selling their goods. He also emphasized that no fees are charged for space, though prospective vendors should contact him for a reservation at 234-736-6546.
