EAST LIVERPOOL - A man whose body was found at the edge of the Ohio River Monday afternoon has been identified by city police, who believe he fell from the Newell Bridge April 13.
The victim was identified as Zane L. Farmer Jr., 64, whose last known address was 614 St. Clair Ave., Apt. 2.
Police said his death was apparently from the fall, although they could not say with any certainty whether Farmer fell accidentally or jumped deliberately to his death.
Fishermen underneath the bridge on the night of April 13 reported hearing a large splash followed by a man screaming for help. Responding officers also could hear someone yelling for help, and search boats were launched, but no one was found that night.
His body was discovered on the river bank by two fishermen on Monday near the Jethro Hollow area of the city. He was recovered by Liverpool Township firefighters, assisted by city police and Norfolk-Southern railroad workers.
Police disclosed Farmer's identity Tuesday after they were able to contact his family, which includes his mother of Salem.
A call to the county coroner regarding a cause of death was not returned last night.
