CALCUTTA - A quick start for Newton Falls proved to be the difference on Tuesday in a 4-2 win over Beaver?Local.

The visitors opened with a three-run first inning and added an insurance run in the third to get past the Beavers (1-1).
Jared Britt took the loss, striking out four and walking two in seven innings of work.
Nick Miller had two hits to lead?Beaver Local, while Sam Frank added a double.
The Beavers will host LaBrae on Thursday.
In junior varsity action, Beaver Local won a 6-2 game at Newton Falls.
Chandler Cornell got the win going four innings and allowing only one run with six strikeouts and no walks.
Caleb Jackson pitched three innings of one-run ball and also had two hits on offense.
Andrew Coplin and Nate Arnolt both had two hits for the Beavers.

NEW MANCHESTER - The Bears improved to 2-4 on the season with a 10-4 win over visiting Harrison Central on Wednesday.
Oak Glen used a 4-run third and a five-run fifth to secure the victory.
Tyler Steed picked up the mound win with 10 strikeouts and three walks over seven innings.
Jeff Hissam and Bub Haddox both doubled for the Bears.
Trey Smith had two singles and Kole Koper had a single and double.
Steed, Tanner Crago, Brandon Ingelheart and Kyle Woodruff all hit safely for Oak Glen.
The Bears will host Weirton Madonna today.

STEUBENVILLE 15, EAST LIVERPOOL 2
EAST LIVERPOOL - One bad inning.
The Potters stayed right with Big Red for six innings, but an 11-run seventh for Steubenville led to a 15-2 win over East Liverpool on Tuesday.
The Potters (0-2) took a 2-1 lead in the second inning and went into the final frame trailing, 4-2.
In the top of the seventh, Big Red exploded for 11 runs.
"We were definitely in the game," East Liverpool coach Erik Adkins said. "It was just one bad inning. The girls showed up to play and had an opportunity to win. We just have to cut down on the errors and strikeouts."
Pitching in her first varsity game, freshman Elise Smith was tagged with the loss. She walked eight and struck out three in seven innings of work.
Katie Utt led the Potters offensively with a double and two RBI.
Sarah Morrell had a double, while Mary Davis and Alyssa Culp both hit safely.
East Liverpool will play at Weirton Madonna today.

NEWTON FALLS - A nine-run first frame spelled trouble for Beaver Local in a 10-0 loss on the road against Newton Falls on Tuesday.
The Beavers (0-1) gave up only five hits, but committed three errors and walked 10 batters in their season opener.
Marissa Kiddey was charged with the loss after giving up 10 runs on five hits over three innings with nine walks and three strikeouts.
Courtney Messenger pitched one scoreless inning for the Beavers with one walk and one strikeout.
Kim Rotellini, Robin Wheeler and Paige Prologo all hit safely for Beaver Local.
Newton Falls' Bre Shade walked the first batter she faced and proceeded to strike out the next nine straight.
"After that first four-pitch walk, I don't think anyone touched the ball," Beaver Local coach Mark Cashdollar said.
Beaver?Local will host Steubenville today.

EAST LIVERPOOL - The East tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday, 5-0, over East Palestine at Thompson Park.
The Potters (1-1) were led by Craig Miller (No. 1 singles) and Nick Harris (No. 2 singles) who won both their matches, 6-0, 6-0.
"We've got most of our players back," East Liverpool coach Jub Whittaker said. "But we still don't have any seniors on the team.
"West Branch and Lordstown will be tough in the N.E.T., but I look for us to be able to compete and have a better season."
The Potters will host American Spirit Academy at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Southern Local, Lisbon at United
HANOVERTON - United swept a home meet Tuesday against ITCL foes Southern Local and Lisbon.
United won the boys meet with 90 points, followed by Southern Lcoal (32) and Lisbon (28).
The Indians' had three first-place finishes individually, including Clayton Cunningham (high jump), Jared Shilot (100) and Jimmy Russell (200).
Southern Local also won the 4x200 relay (Shilot, Knox, Napierkowski, McKenzie).
Lisbon's Chad Bosel took first in the 800 and 1600.
On the girls side, United won with 116.5 points, followed by Lisbon (43.5) and Southern Local (0).
Lisbon's Bobbie Jo Evans won two events, including the 400 and the high jump.
Beaver Local vs. Girard vs. Campbell
CALCUTTA - Girard invaded the area on Tuesday and came away with a clean sweep in track action against homestanding Beaver?Local and Campbell Memorial.
Girard eased to a victory in the boys meet with 106.5 points, followed by Beaver Local (42) and Campbell (15.5).
On the girls side, Girard led with 68.5 points, followed by Beaver Local (57.5) and Campbell (38).
Mike Houk stole the show for the Beaver Local boys winning three events, including the 800 (2:19.40), 1600 (5:29.70) and the 3200 (12:12.80).
The Beavers' 4x800 relay team (Houk, Luke Sutton, Blake Gaskill, Joe Sitarik) also took the top spot in 9:25.30.
Patricia Taggert took first place in two events on the girls side with wins in the 800 (2:37.30) and the 3200 (13:29.10). She was second in the 1600 (5:54.50).
Jessica Fair was tops in the long jump (13-2.25).
The Beavers will return to action Thursday at Steubenville Catholic Central.
