CALCUTTA - A local church is taking steps to make sure area students are prepared for the new school year.
Destiny House, on Calcutta-Smith Ferry Road, will host its third annual "ComDay" event Aug. 13.
Teresa Diffenderfer, social ministry director, said the event is a Community Day focused on offering items and services to area students in need.
"We just really want to involve our community and show that we are neighbors and friends, and that we care," she said.
The church will be giving away 300 backpacks full of school supplies to students in kindergarten through fourth grade.
Members of the church added a personal touch by including hand-written notes and prayers in each backpack, as well as small change purses with money, she said.
The church gave away 125 backpacks the first year, and Diffenderfer said more people are participating in the event each year.
Children must be present to receive the backpacks.
Families attending the event can also take home fresh produce and bakery items donated by Second Harvest Food Bank of Youngstown.
Free hot dogs and beverages will also be available.
The church is planning to feed up to 450 families.
Stylists from Signature Styles will also be on hand for free hair cuts by appointment.
The hair cuts will take place inside the church while other events will be located in the back parking lot and side yard.
Musical and children's entertainment and activities will also be offered.
"ComDay" will begin at noon and last until 3 p.m. Destiny House is located at 49345 Calcutta-Smith Ferry Road.
