NEW CUMBERLAND - About 40 officers and K-9 units from the Tri-State area snared 13 individuals Tuesday wanted on drug-related charges. Another 13 remain at large.
The sweep was led by the Brooke-Hancock-Weirton Drug Task Force (DTF). The five-person team includes one Weirton police officer, two Hancock County Sheriff's Office deputies, and two Drug Enforcement Agency agents, a DTF spokesman said.
"We have state warrants for these people, which is the result of several months of investigating, including drug buys by agents," the spokesman said. "We decided to go after them all in one day. We want to get the dealers off the streets."
Other Hancock County Sheriff's Office deputies, police from several municipalities, and K-9 units from the sheriff's office, Weirton and Follansbee police departments were also active, he said.
"We have a serious problem with drugs in our communities, and most disturbing is that we've seen a sharp rise recently in overdose deaths from prescription painkillers and heroin," the DTF spokesman said. "We want to stop this, and our activities today with the combined efforts of a multi-jurisdictional team is one way to do that."
Other ways, the spokesman said, are through prosecution, drug courts and rehabilitation.
