Alumni rematch

March 21, 2010 - By MICHAEL D. McELWAIN (mmcelwain@reviewonline.com

EAST LIVERPOOL - A celebrity alumni basketball game is set for this Friday at Potter Fieldhouse and proceeds will help benefit the upcoming All-Class Reunion.

East Liverpool Mayor Jim Swoger said he's been meeting and talking to fellow East Liverpool team coaches Bob Foranzo and Kenny Cunningham as the trio plans its attack against friendly rival Wellsville.

Mayor Joe Surace will help lead Wellsville's effort.

"The big basketball game will be the battle of East Liverpool High School alumni against Wellsville alumni, and it's going to be good," Swoger promised.

The event at Potter Fieldhouse starts at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Swoger said the players must be 50 years old or older.

The Potter Alumni Cheerleaders along with the Tiger Alumni Cheerleaders will be featured.

The Kinsey Young Aerobic Group will be featured at halftime.

"This will help raise some money for the East Liverpool Alumni Association and their effort to bring the All-Class Reunion to East Liverpool," Swoger said. "A lot of planning and work goes into the reunion, and the East Liverpool Alumni Association is working hard to make it just right."

The All-Class Reunion is scheduled for the July 4 weekend.

That will be a busy weekend in the East Liverpool area. Wellsville is having its alumni reunion during the same time frame, and another, similar, event is taking place in Chester.

As for Friday's basketball fundraiser, the doors open at 5:30 p.m. and tip off is set for 7 p.m.

Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased the night of the game or at the following locations:

* East Liverpool - Chamber of Commerce, Bob and Robin's, the Carriage House, Keystone Printing, Marty's Pharmacy, Hall Closet and Outdoor Army.

* Calcutta - Sears, Smith's Feed and Dunham's Sports.

* Wellsville - the Carriage House II and Gibby's Mini Mart.

"All the East Liverpool coaches, headed by coach Kenny Cunningham, are hoping for another strong performance by the old East Liverpool Potters," Swoger said.
