Columbiana County Sheriff for Dec. 7, 2009
* Alisha Foreman, 1110 James Drive, Wellsville, reported several people stealing a pine tree off their property at 9:34 p.m. Friday. It was found the pine tree was actually on township property and not that of a private citizen. It was on the right of way of Old Irondale Road just south of state Route 39.
* Devon Hiner, 39110 Grant St., Lisbon, reported a woman stopped her vehicle in front of his house while he was outside, got out of her car, started yelling at him, grabbed his jacket and hit him in the head. He tried to get into the house, and she pushed him through the door, which was damaged. Hiner told deputies he did not know the woman's name.
* William Barz, 37404 Hazel Run Road, Salineville, reported at 12:31 p.m. Sunday someone broke into his home and took several guns along with a large quantity of ammunition. The rear window of the home was broken out. The theft happened sometime between 4:45 p.m. Saturday and 12:20 p.m. Sunday.
* An underage party was reported at 12:55 a.m. Saturday at 11876 Leslie Road, where deputies saw several men in the living room and several alcoholic beverages on the table, but no one actually drinking them. The only person on which deputies could smell alcohol was of age to drink. Everyone else denied drinking. The homeowner was asleep and did not know if anyone were drinking. The alcohol was thrown out, and everyone was warned about underage drinking.
* Tavis Bellow, 3545 Slater Road, Salem, reported he heard a noise outside and found his mailbox destroyed. His mail was laying on the ground at 11:56 p.m. Saturday. The incident happened sometime between 11:15 and 11:30 p.m.
* Ray Carnes, 50, Buffalo Road, Kensington, was charged with aggravated menacing at 3:48 p.m. Thursday. Corey Essick, Manor Road, Minerva, reported he and friends had been hunting with permission on a property in West Township when Carnes pulled up in a green vehicle, exited holding a rifle, told Essick to drop his gun and yelled at Essick and his friends for hunting on his property. Essick told Carnes they were hunting with permission on a different property and Carnes allegedly threatened to shoot Essick in the kneecaps, yelled at one of his friends and left in the vehicle. A deputy located Carnes outside his home and he said he heard a gunshot on his property and had gone to investigate. The deputy asked Carnes if he had a gun and he said he had a toy one in the woods, but after the deputy asked to see it, he admitted it was a real .22 caliber magnum rifle and it was in the house.
* A state Route 39, Wellsville, woman reported at 11:38 a.m. Thursday that her girlfriend had become upset the previous night after finding out she was leaving, put a belt around her neck and punched her in the head. She stayed the night and left in the morning for East Liverpool City Hospital, where staff told her she had a concussion. The woman filed for a restraining order and signed a refusal to prosecute.
* Charles Robbins, Alderlick Road, Wellsville, reported at 7:15 p.m. Thursday that a neighbor had been poisoning his aunt's horses. One horse was dead and another was sick. He said his aunt had seen the neighbor dumping something that looked like antifreeze over the fence in the past.
* Juanita Owens, Depot Road, Lisbon, reported at 11:04 a.m. Wednesday that she had received a call from a man claiming to be Lt. William Rice of the Baltimore Drug Enforcement Agency and saying the agency had intercepted a package of pills being sent to her address. He instructed her to pay $950 by sending the money through Western Union to a man named Hector Miguel Sanchez in the Dominican Republic or else the agency would issue a warrant for her arrest. A friend of Owens called the number back and the man was "nasty" toward him. The friend then called the actual Baltimore DEA, which informed him this is a scam dating back to the summer. A deputy made two attempts to contact the man but was met with a message saying he had reached the Baltimore DEA and all offices were busy. He left a message for Lt. Rice to call him back but did not receive a response.
* Steve Roberts, state Route 39, Salineville, reported at 11 a.m. Thursday that workers installing a waterline near his property have been parking their vehicles on his property and performing illegal activities at night. He said he has placed barrels and "no trespassing" signs on his property and the workers have been knocking them over. He said he spoke to a man about the problem and the man denied knowing about people parking on Roberts' property until Roberts told him he guessed there wouldn't be a problem if he broke out the windows on the vehicles, after which the man had workers move them. Roberts said one man brushed against him while walking and told him on multiple occasions that he would knock his teeth out. A deputy informed Roberts of his rights and he said he would call if there were further problems.
* Bob Bertelsen, Applesway Drive, Leetonia, reported at 12:47 p.m. Monday that someone had entered his garage and stole an industrial fire extinguisher.
* Brandy Wade, Winona Road, Salem, reported at 7:44 a.m. Thursday that someone had smashed her mailbox for the second time.
* Alexandria Bentfield, Roosevelt Avenue, reported at 8:24 p.m. Thursday that she had gone to her ex-boyfriend's house to drop off custody papers and there were no problems until his girlfriend and mother came outside and yelled at her to leave. As she was backing up her vehicle to drive away, she said the other women threw rocks at her vehicle.
* Theresa Bender, state Route 154, Lisbon, reported at 11:57 a.m. Thursday that someone had shot fluorescent orange paint balls at her home the previous night.
* Jim Pezzano, owner of J.P. Plumbing, reported at 11:35 a.m. Thursday that someone had shot his business with about six fluorescent orange paint balls.
* Wayne Norris, Metz Road, New Waterford, reported at 12:03 p.m. Thursday that a woman moved out of his house and, while he was driving her to an address in Beaver County, she threatened and struck him. He said he would transport her son to Beaver County when he arrived from school but was concerned about her coming to collect belongings. A deputy told Norris the woman has established residency at his home and has the right to return. He provided Norris with the proper procedure if she returns and does not want to leave.
* Becky Thompson, Ashton Road, East Liverpool, reported at 1:24 p.m. Thursday that a vehicle pulled in her driveway the previous night with no lights on and left in a hurry. A deputy attempted to follow up with Thompson by phone call but was directed to her answering machine.
