Monument to be dedicated Dec. 11 to Cathy Salter

December 3, 2009 - By JO ANN BOBBY-GILBERT / jgilbert@reviewonline.com

WELLSVILLE - When the Twin Towers fell Sept. 11, 2001, in New York City, Cathy Salter was among the victims, and now a donation from the local Eagles Aerie has made it possible to dedicate a memorial to the former village native.

The dedication ceremony is set 1 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Boy with the Boot statue near the floodwall, and a host of dignitaries, safety forces and elected officials are expected to participate.

The Eagles donated $7,000 toward the memorial, with the etched stone depicting the Twin Towers made by Richardson Monument. Village workers recently prepared the site with white stone and the monument was placed on its base, covered from view until the dedication ceremony.

Councilman Tony Cataldo spearheaded the project, which also includes a new flag pole and flag from Flag Specialties.

The ceremony will begin with a flag raising by VFW Post 5764 and the national anthem performed by the high school band and ensemble, Ebony & Ivory.

Although the keynote speaker has not yet been confirmed, Mayor Joe Surace will serve as master of ceremonies.

Salter was the daughter of Eleanor Salter of East Palestine and the late Henry Salter. Family members have been invited to attend or, failing that, to send comments to be read during the ceremony. Reportedly, some family members have indicated they will be in attendance.

Also expected to participate are U.S. Army Sgt. Todd Farnsworth, state Sen. Jason Wilson, state Rep. Linda Bolon and county Commissioner Penny Traina.

The village's police and fire departments also will participate in honor of those police officers and firefighters who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks.
