LISBON - The Shade Tree Commission has some trees it wants to give away to village residents willing to pay the cost of having them uprooted and replanted.

Commission secretary Cheryl Mills said the dozen or so trees are those planted by the Ohio Department of Transportation at the park-and-ride site east of town on state Route 154. When ODOT created the park-and-ride site it planted four rows of trees at the location, one of which runs parallel with older trees along the property line with the Columbiana County Mental Health Center.

Mills said the other trees, which are on the mental health property, are older, larger and overshadow the one row of ODOT trees. She said they will eventually die unless moved to another location.

"We don't want to lose those trees, and if they stay where they are at they are eventually going to die," she said.

The Shade Tree Commission has proposed letting residents take the trees if they agree to plant them in the front of their home along the street. Since these are ODOT trees, they can only be replanted on properties bordering state routes that run through Lisbon. Mills said only village residents who live on state Route 164 and state Route 45 (East and West Lincoln Way and North Market Street) would be eligible.

Participants would also have to pay the cost of having the tree removed from its current location and replanted at their residence, which Wayne Willis of the Robinson Tree Farm estimates would cost about $150 on average. The Robinson Tree Farm has agreed to do the replanting for the commission.

Willis said there are about a dozen trees of all sorts about 15 to 18 feet in height.
