CANFIELD - Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov.10, 2009, at St. John Greek Orthodox Church in Boardman for Dr. Demetrios John (James) Dallis, 80 of Canfield, who passed away Friday morning. Demetrios was born Dec. 19, 1928, in East Liverpool, the son of John and Despina Dallis.
He received his bachelor of Science degree from the Ohio Sate University and also his Medical degree in 1959 from the Ohio State University College of Medicine.
He served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corp from 1951 to 1953 as a First Lieutenaut with one year active duty in Korea. He completed a rotating internship and a four year surgical residency at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Dallis practiced general surgery from July 1964 to June 1996 and was Director of Surgical Services at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center from 1987 to 1998. Demetrios was a Diplomat of American Board of Surgery and a fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He was also a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and performed the first laparoscopic gallbladder procedure at St. Elizabeth's. Dr. Dallis was a pioneer in the use of lasers in general surgery. Demetrios was on the faculty of Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine and held memberships to the American Medical Association, the Ohio State Medical Association, Mahoning County Medical Society, the Ohio State Surgical Society and the Cleveland Surgical Society. He served as president of the Mahoning County Medical Society, past editor of the Mahoning County Medical Society Bulletin, president of the Medical Dental Bureau, Secretary treasurer of the Medical Staff of St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center and the Board of Hospice. A devoted buckeye fan , has was a member of the Presidents Club of Ohio State, Nu Sigma Nu Medical fraternity and the Youngstown Country Club and its Men's Golf Association. He was also a avid gardener. Dr. Dallis served as President of the Parish Council at St. John Greek Orthodox Church for two years and was on the Board of the American Hellenic Educational Association and the Eastern Orthodox Men's Society.
Beside his wife of 52 years the former Nina Nicoludis, he leaves two daughters Barbara Dallis and Kelly (Gerald) Kehoc both of Boston, three grandchildren Yianni, Patrick and Dallis and a brother Dr. Constantine Dallis of Grand Rapids, Mich.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to St. John Greek Orthodox Church, Endowment Fund, 4955 Glenwood Ave., Boardman, Ohio 44512.
