Common Pleas for 11-13
A woman who broke into a New Waterford church and stole the organist's car in January, then stole a purse from a woman in Calcutta in April was sentenced to prison for three-and-a-half years.
Donella Sheldon, 20, whose last known address was Pioneer Road, Negley, appeared for sentencing in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court recently for charges of robbery and burglary, both third-degree felonies, and theft, a fourth-degree felony.
Judge C. Ashley Pike ordered a prison term of two years for the purse-snatching incident which resulted in a robbery charge, consecutive to the sentence in the other case. He sentenced Sheldon to one year for the church burglary and 18 months for the car theft, to be served at the same time.
Court documents said Sheldon and her co-defendants entered the unlocked basement of Zion Lutheran Church in New Waterford on Jan. 19 and ran into the church organist, Madeline Wilhelm, after they had gathered up enough groceries to fill two bags and removed a bottle of communion wine from the church. They fled and stole Wilhelm's car from the church parking lot.
The robbery charge stemmed from Sheldon and a co-defendant threatening force against a woman when they stole her purse in the area of Dollar General on state Route 170 in Calcutta on April 21.
