East End odor investigated
By MICHAEL D. McELWAIN (mmcelwain@reviewonline.com)EAST LIVERPOOL - Reports of an odor of iodine in the air around the East End community were investigated Tuesday morning, but no source was located.
Residents in the area called East Liverpool Mayor Jim Swoger's office, council members and the fire department.
At first, Heritage/WTI was labeled as the likely cause by several residents. That notion was quickly refuted.
"Whatever people might smell, it's not coming from here," Raymond Wayne, media relations official for Heritage/WTI said Tuesday afternoon.
The hazardous waste incinerator shut down operations Sunday for a planned month-long maintenance outage.
Nevertheless, Wayne said employees walked the perimeter of the facility and took measurements. Nothing out of the ordinary was detected.
The East Liverpool Fire Department responded to the Klondike area of the lower East End.
"We couldn't pinpoint anything, but we detected only a faint odor," firefighter Eric Croxall said. "It smelled like a cleaning solution solvent."
Firefighters rode around but could not find a source. Swoger said the odor was detected in the downtown area as well.
Council member Brian Kerr, head of the Refuse and Recycling Committee, also contacted Heritage/WTI and was told the business responded to all possibilities but was not operating on Tuesday.
