Tip leads to arrest of Midland man

By MICHAEL D. McELWAIN/mmcelwain@reviewonline.com
POSTED: July 30, 2009

EAST LIVERPOOL - Pennsylvania authorities offered a tip and St. Clair Township police officers made an arrest Tuesday, charging Midland resident Charles M. Tatsch with receiving stolen property.

Ohioville Borough officials contacted the St. Clair department at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday about a man that was going to try and sell a stolen pickup truck in the Grimms Bridge area, according to a police report. The deal was supposed to take place at 4:30 p.m.

Officers Stephen Brophey and Joseph Brophey went to the area and found a vehicle matching the description in a driveway at 50950 Grimms Bridge Road. According to the report, the pickup truck was then confirmed as stolen.

Several people were in the front yard, and Tatsch reportedly told officers he found the truck owned by his good friend, Ray, sitting on Grimms Bridge Road with the keys in it, so he drove it to the 50950 Grimms Bridge Road location so he could call Ray.

The report indicates Tatsch did not know Ray's last name, and he did not know the people who lived at the Grimms Bridge Road residence but wanted to use their phone.

Tatsch, 39, of Beaver Avenue, Midland, was placed in the police car and was taken to the police station when he could not produce any identification.

On the way to the station, the report indicates Tatsch admitted to being in the East End of East Liverpool on Monday and was at Pack's Bar. He reportedly told officers he was walking to a friend's home near the bar and saw a truck with keys in it and took the truck.

According to the report, Tatsch said he was going to try to sell the truck for money since he was recently divorced and had no job.

Tatsch was charged with receiving stolen property and transported to the county jail. The pickup truck was towed away.

On Wednesday, Tatsch made an East Liverpool Municipal Court appearance. A cash/surety or 10 percent bond was set at $10,000 and a preliminary hearing is set for 10:30 a.m. Aug. 6.
