Common Pleas for 7-25
A Salem man who stole prescription pads from a doctor's office and used them to forge prescriptions for the painkiller Vicodin was ordered to prison for 18 months for serveral felony counts.
Justin Harbin, 22, of 484 W. Fifth St., Salem, appeared for sentencing Monday in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court.
Judge C. Ashley Pike sentenced him to 12 months in prison for illegal processing of drug documents, possession of drugs and forgery, all fifth-degree felonies, and a misdemeanor charge of receiving stolen property, plus an additional six months for another felony charge of illegal processing of drug documents. He received credit for 17 days served in the county jail.
Harbin's license was suspended for six months.
Court documents said Harbin tried to have one of the forged prescriptions for Vicodin filled at the Salem Walgreen's on Oct. 10. On Oct. 13, he tried to have another forged prescription for Vicodin filled at the Salem Rite Aid, where he was also caught with heroin in his possession, the forged prescription and the prescription pads stolen from the office of Dr. Larry Smith.
Also in Common Pleas Court:
Derek Lichtenwalter, 33, of Canton, was ordered to prison for 15 months for four counts of receiving stolen property, all felonies, after his probation was terminated for violations. He received credit for 50 days served in the county jail. The sentence was ordered served at the same time as sentences he's serving out of Tuscarawas and Stark counties. Documents said Lichtenwalter was caught May 3 in West Township in possession of a stolen tractor trailer belonging to Rory King, along with a flat bed trailer belonging to Landstar Inway Inc., a metal flat bed trailer belonging to Jerry Swihart and a pickup belonging to Ken Rogers Enterprises Inc.
A new trial date has been scheduled in the case of the Leetonia man, who was to go on trial next month for allegedly causing the death of his infant son.
Justin Snow, 28, of Oak Street, was scheduled to go on trial Aug. 4 in county Common Pleas Court for involuntary manslaughter, but the trial date has been pushed back to Oct. 6.
Assistant County Prosecutor Tim McNicol said he requested the continuance because he recently received a report prepared by the medical expert hired by Snow's attorney. McNicol said some of the expert's conclusions differ from those set forth in the county coroner's report and they need more time to thoroughly review the document before proceeding to trial.
Snow's nearly 2-month young son, Isaac McDaniel, died at his home on July 14, 2007. Snow was indicted last year on charges of involuntary manslaughter and child endangering.
In other court action, Karl M. Becknell, 45, of Carrollton, was sentenced by Judge David Tobin to two years in prison after pleading guilty to DUI, his eighth drunken-driving offense in 20 years. Becknell was cited while driving in Perry Township last August.
In addition to the prison term, Becknell was fined $1,350 and his license was suspended for 10 years.
Jeremy J. Kromer, 29, of Youngstown, was sentenced by Judge Tobin to three months in the county jail for stealing from his employer, 4 Wheel Drive Hardware in Columbiana. He was accused of using customer credit cards to bill merchandise and then have it delivered to an address near his Pennsylvania hometown.
Kromer was accused of stealing $8,000 and he was ordered to make restitution. He was placed on probation by the judge for four years, the first six months of which must be served at the prison alternative facility in Wintersville following his release from jail.
