Red Cross to hold blood drive
CHESTER - The Red Cross is having a blood drive from noon to 6 p.m. July 9 at the Chester V.F.W., 416 Carolina Ave., Chester, and is specially inviting 16-year-olds to donate.
Previously, only donors 17 years of age and older were permitted to donate blood. However, a recent change to state law now allows the American Red Cross to accept blood donations from those who are 16-years-old, with parental permission.
Recent Red Cross statistics indicate that 16- and 17-year-olds contributed approximately eight percent of annual Red Cross blood collections. West Virginia joins more than 20 other states in enacting such legislation. The bill went in to effect July 1.
Sixteen-year-olds must bring a parent with them to provide signed consent, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health, and not have given whole blood within the past 56 days. Call 800-542-5663 for more information.
