Vacant home destroyed by fire
Review Staff ReportsWELLSVILLE - A late night fire Thursday that destroyed a home just past Russell Heights is still under investigation.
Village Chief William Smith said volunteers were called at 11:34 p.m. to the home, owned by David McCourt, 44420 10th Street Extension, which was vacant.
He said preliminary reports indicate McCourt was doing work on the house, but that he has not yet been contacted for further information. Smith was uncertain whether utilities were connected to the two-story wood frame home or whether it was insured.
The house was a total loss, he said.
Highlandtown also responded to the blaze, and Liverpool Township was placed on Wellsville's station floor to stand by.
Smith said heavy rains coupled with water from the firefighting efforts caused a considerable amount of mud to slide from the driveway of the home onto the roadway, and Yellow Creek Township road crews were called to scrape up the mud.
Fire crews completed the call at 3:15 a.m., with Smith saying it took firefighters a considerable amount of time to clean up equipment after the fire due to the large volume of mud they encountered.
