Mary Hudson

MONTROSE, AL Mary Ellen Smith DuPont Hudson, 88, of Eastdale Estates, Montgomery, AL, passed away at 3:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at Montrose Bay Rehabilitation Center, in Montrose following a lengthy illness.

Born in East Liver-pool on Oct. 9, 1920, she was the daughter of the late H. Dan Smith and Bessie Anderson Smith. She had lived in East Liverpool for most of her life until moving to Alabama in 1972.

A 1938 graduate of East Liverpool High School, she attended Baldwin-Wallace College and the Noble Thompson Secretarial School in Pittsburgh. During World War II, she served her country as a Staff Sergeant with the U.S, Marine Corps.

Soon after the war, she entered Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, where she earned a Bachelors degree in Psychology. Later, she received a Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh.

At one time, she had worked at the Edwin M. Knowles China Company, but most of her career was spent in the area of psychiatric social work. She was retired from the State Department of Mental Health in Alabama.

In 1993, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Milton Hudson.

Survivors include one daughter, Jean Olund, of Parker, CO, and one son, Dan DuPont of Fairhope, AL, along with three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Many cherished friends and loving family members survive her as well.

Also preceding her in death was one sister, Jenny Lind McNutt, who died in 1994.

Memorial services are to be held in East Liverpool at a later date.

The Dawson Funeral Home has been entrusted with her arrangements.
