Body found in Ohio River

May 6, 2009

A body discovered Tuesday afternoon in the Ohio River has been tentatively identified as that of a missing Rochester, Pa., man, who reportedly jumped from the Rochester-Monaca Bridge in early April.

Larry Ronald Smith III, 23, of Rochester, reportedly jumped from the bridge April 4 after he was stopped by police for outstanding gun and drug charges.

A Hancock County man who was fishing discovered the body in the water near the mouth of Yellow Creek on Tuesday and notified a Norfolk Southern employee working nearby.

The employee immediately notified the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department at approximately 1:15 p.m. The Hancock County Sheriff's Department was later called in.

"The body has been transferred to Pennsylvania for an autopsy," Hancock County Sheriff Mike White said. "Pennsylvania authorities will have the case from here."
