'Stand Down' event scheduled for Lisbon
LISBON - On Nov. 12, the Columbiana County Homeless and Hunger Task Force will be sponsoring the county's fifth "Stand Down" in Lisbon at the Lion's Club (Industrial Parkway. It runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Individuals who are struggling to make ends meet may come and receive information concerning services that are available to them in Columbiana County. There also will be a food distribution on the site of the Stand Down.
Last year more than 300 households participated.
The Homeless and Hunger Task Force is asking the community to assist them in providing the goods and services needed for the event. Some items needed are blankets, hats, gloves, scarves, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, mouthwash, combs, brushes and other personal hygiene supplies. Food items are a big need this year. Canned vegetables, fruits, soups, beans, juice, peanut butter and jelly, pasta and pasta sauces, rice, cereal, tuna and potatoes are just some of the food needed to help a family of four get by for a few days.
"Every week, we are getting more and more phone calls from people who are homeless and in need of a place to stay," says Carla Sukosd of The Way Station. "People are living in cars, with other families, in motels all over the county: it is harder to see the homeless in a rural community, but they are there and their numbers are growing."
Those interested in volunteering or with further questions may call Barb Brown at Community Action (330-424-4013) or Carla Sukosd at The Way Station (330-482-5072). Donation of goods or food may be dropped off at Catholic Charities, 115 E. Washington St., Lisbon.
