NEW CUMBERLAND - With a room full of family, friends and co-workers past and present in attendance, the Hancock County Sheriff's Office said farewell to Sergeant Tim Wansack, who will retire after 35 years with the department.

"Besides being a valued deputy, he's been a good friend to me," said Sheriff Mike White, who first met Wansack as a sheriff's reserve in 1973. "In addition to a lot of good police work, we've had a lot of good times ... I hate to see you go, but you're going on to better things for you for now."

"Everybody I've worked with I appreciate. I've enjoyed working with the people of Hancock County," said Wansack.

Wansack added he hopes to continue to help the people of Hancock County at his new position as the criminal justice teacher at the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center. Wansack, who was a school teacher before becoming a sheriff's deputy, will be taking over for former sheriff Jeff Woofter, who has been named Oak Glen High School's new assistant principal.

White also presented Wansack with a plaque from the Hancock County Deputy Sheriff's Association to honor his 35 years of service to the county.

White said that due to Wansack's departure, they will be looking at the existing civil service sergeant's list in order to promote someone. White said they are also already looking at candidates to fill vacancies in the sheriff's department.
