Alvin C. Skeens, 86

EAST LIVERPOOL Alvin C. Skeens 86, of Meadowbrook Circle died at 5:55 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at Nentwick Convalescent Center, following a lengthy illness.

Born in East Liverpool on Feb. 10, 1922, a son of the late Charles and Hazel Skeens, he was a lifetime area resident.

A bricklayer and mechanic for H.K. Porter Co. for 37 years, he retired in 1981.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served as a Sergeant with the 29th Replacement Battalion, 429th Replacement Company, totaling three years with the 5th Army in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations.

He previously served on the board of directors for Camp Fire Girls, was in the Civil Air Patrol, and also the Ohio State Highway Patrol Auxiliary.

He was reared by an aunt and uncle in Stratton, Ohio, the late Charles and Ludella Walker.

Surviving at home is his wife, Gladys Bartimus Skeens, to whom he was married 61 years.

Also surviving are two daughters, Barbara Skeens of Joliet, Ill.; and Carol L. Liebschner and her husband, Martin Sr., of East Liverpool; and one son, Gary A. Skeens of East Liverpool.

There are four grandchildren: Sherill Liebschner of East Liverpool, Martin Liebschner Jr. of Savannah, Ga., Sandra Liebschner of Lakewood, Ohio, and Susan Liebschner of East Liverpool.

There are two great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A half sister, Dorothy McConnell of East Liverpool, survives.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an aunt and uncle, Blair and Alice Flower.

Services are to be conducted by Reverend Stephen Cramer of the church at 11 a.m. Friday at the Dawson Funeral Home, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Burial is to be in Riverview Cemetery where the Tri State Veterans Burial Group will accord full military honors.

Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to the Trinity Presbyterian Church at Maine Blvd., East Liverpool, Ohio 43920.
