CALCUTTA - John Curtis Akers, 66, of Maple Street, died at 6:41 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at Beaver Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born May 24, 1942, in Hellier, Ky., a son of Mary Akers Justice of Wellsville and the late Curtis Akers, he was a lifetime area resident.
He retired in 2004 from the former J&L Steel Co. after many years in the maintenance department.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Germany.
He held memberships in the East Liverpool Blue Lodge No. 681 Free and Accepted Masons of which he was a Past Master, 32nd degree in the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, and a member of the Al Koran Shrine Temple.
Surviving at home is his wife, Sondra Rice Akers, who he married Feb. 14, 1964.
Also surviving is a son, Jason Curtis Akers, at home.
There is one grandson, James Curtis Johnson, of East Liverpool.
Two sisters surviving are Mrs. Amy Cunningham of Wellsville and Jeannie Bleakley, of Salem. There are also several half sisters and brothers.
In addition to his father, preceding him in death were a grandfather, William S. Talbert, and a grandmother, Amy Parish Talbert.
Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Burn Care, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati OH 45229-3095.
Evangelist Will Montgomery of the St. Clair Ave. Church of Christ is to conduct services at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Dawson Funeral Home, where friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday.
Burial is to be in Calcutta United Presbyterian Cemetery after which family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center.
