BASEBALL: Toronto tops Wellsville in sectional tournament

BRIDGEPORT — The Tigers handed the Red Knights a free pass Thursday.
Wellsville pitchers walked 13 batters and the defense committed five errors in a 13-3 five-inning loss to Toronto in the OHSAA Div. IV Sectional Baseball Tournament.
“It seemed like no matter who I threw in there, they couldn’t throw strikes,” Wellsville coach John Dalrymple said. “We had them on them nervous and on their heels, but we just put too many guys on base. They only had six hits.”
The Tigers, who finish the season at 8-16, took a 2-0 lead after the second inning, but that’s when the bases on balls began to take their toll.
The Red Knights put up five runs in the third to take control and seven in the fifth to close out the game.
“Pitching is definitely going to be the biggest thing we emphasize next spring,” Dalrymple said. “Overall, we won the games we were in. We just had a lack of pitching. By the end of the season we were down to three pitchers.”
Tyler Kelly was saddled with the loss for the Tigers after surrendering four runs on no hits and six walks in two innings of work.
Michael Stacy and John Rutter led the Wellsville offense, both going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Jordan Dalrymple reached base safely in all three plate appearances.
