WELLSVILLE — Police officers shut down a portion of the village late Tuesday evening following a shooting that sent one male to the hospital.
A suspect is in custody, but Wellsville Police Chief Joe Scarabino did not release the name of the victim nor the suspect.
“The police department will follow all leads and make a rational decision based on the information,” Scarabino said late Tuesday.
The victim in the shooting is described as a white male in his late 20s to early 30s.
The male was transported by ambulance to East Liverpool City Hospital suffering from three gunshot wounds to his chest, shoulder and abdomen, according to initial reports.
The situation unfolded at approximately 10:05 p.m. Tuesday as Wellsville Police and members of the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Department sealed off an area near the intersection of Ninth and Commerce streets.
The incident occurred off Commerce Street between Ninth and Tenth streets, according to police officials.
Officers were going thorough a list of possible witnesses and evidence late Tuesday. Several witnesses reported hearing “three to four firecrackers, pops or shots,” according to Scarabino.
The victim was possibly airlifted to a Pittsburgh-area hospital from City Hospital later Tuesday night.
According to unconfirmed reports phoned into the newsroom late Tuesday, the incident could have surrounded a dispute over a rental unit in the village.
The Review is withholding the names of those involved, according to the sources, pending verification from law enforcement investigators.
Witnesses at the scene reported hearing several shots ring out and a young male was transported away from the scene in a Wellsville Police vehicle.
The county prosecutor and members of the BCII were also assisting in the investigation and in securing the crime scene.
