Don Chaney
While Chester native Don Chaney, a bomber pilot in World War II, was a part of several events that have become a part of American history, such as D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge, Chaney made a bit of his own history with just an opinion. Chaney started out as a glider pilot and was moved around 13 times in one year to various flight schools. While he was in Arkansas, Chaney said they were told there were too many glider pilots and that they had three options. They could go home, with the strong likelihood of being drafted as a private, join the regular army, or take the cadet test. Since he was already a staff sergeant, Chaney elected to take the test, which he passed, and was then pushed through flight school. Chaney flew to Puerto Rico, British Guiana, Brazil, and Morocco. “We spent ten days (in Morocco) waiting for the right wind to fly. This was the first time I saw thousands of prisoners, Italians behind chain fences begging for cigarettes.
