National Weather Service and local officials are still keeping a watchful eye on the Ohio River, but it doesn’t look like the river will be rising to flood stage in the area today and tomorrow. New Cumberland Mayor Joe Sargent said he participated in a conference call Saturday with National Weather Service officials and discovered anticipated precipitation amounts had decreased. “Flood stages have went way down ... everywhere south of Pittsburgh on the Ohio River is safe from floods at this point in time,” he said. The National Weather Service (NWS) had issued a flood watch for Wellsville, New Cumberland and East Liverpool yesterday, but all watches were canceled Saturday, according to NWS Warning Coordination Meteorologist Rich Kane. Kane, who is stationed at the NWS Pittsburgh office, participated in the conference call Sargent was a part of Saturday and informed officials the area really “dodged the bullet” with regard to flooding.
