This and That

December 16, 2011 - Paul Edgar
Quite a lot of news in the boxing world in the past few days. Here's a roundup of some of the more notable happenings. *The WBC has ordered a rematch between Chad Dawson and Bernard Hopkins following their controversial light heavyweight title bout. Just days after the California State Athletic Commission overturned a decision that gave Dawson at TKO win, the WBC wants the fight to happen again. Dawson threw Hopkins off his back and Hopkins was injured and could not continue. No foul was originally given to Dawson, thus a TKO win was awarded. The WBC rematch ruling, however, also states that a rematch should take place "unless representatives for the two sides agree to another arrangement." So, basically the rematch order is more of a suggestion. There is much doubt as to whether the two will get back into the ring together. The most glaring reason is that there isn't much demand for a rematch. The fight will be a tough sell to the public. *The WBC also ordered Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to fight Sergio Martinez for the middleweight title. Again, the "order" was more of a recommendation, and the fight likely won't happen. At least yet. Chavez Jr. is still being protected by his promoters and they likely won't want to face the supremely skilled Martinez at this point in his career. Both fighters have upcoming bouts scheduled. Chavez Jr. will fight on HBO on Feb. 5, while Martinez is set to return to HBO on March 17. Chavez could face Britain's Darren Barker (23-1, 14 KO). Martinez might be fighting Dmitry Pirog or Felix Sturm. *Glen Johnson is set to have surgery to repair torn ligaments in both elbows. Johnson, who turns 43 on Jan. 2, is coming off a loss to super middleweight champion Lucian Bute. Johnson says he will need about three months recovery time, but does plan to continue fighting. Until next time, I'm throwing in the towel.
