Oxnard or bust

October 28, 2011 - Paul Edgar
The comeback of Kelly Pavlik continues. Or does it? Last weekend, Pavlik had a meeting in the Big Apple with his promoter, Top Rank's Bob Arum, and his manager, Cameron Dunkin. ESPN.com reported that Top Rank wanted Pavlik to switch trainer and training locations. They said Pavlik would be flying to Oxnard, Ca. to meet his new trainer, Robert Garcia, and see the area. That sounded interesting, to say the least. But, Youngstown media outlets have contacted Pavlik's current trainer, Jack Loew, and he has said Pavlik has told him that those reports are not true. So, who are we to believe? It would be nice if Pavlik made some sort of statement as to what's going on. Until then, we can only speculate. My guess is Top Rank made the trainer and training site switch somewhat of an ultimatum. They figure without a change, no one is going to really buy into a Pavlik comeback. The part I'm confused about is the discrepancy between ESPN.com's reporting and what Loew has told the local media. The only way I see the two sides saying different things is if Pavlik is saying different things to different people. Apparently, only time will tell. Until next time, I'm throwing in the towel.
