Marquez vs. Diaz
Mon, January 5, 2009 @ 6:15PM
Two big-time names in the lightweight (135 pounds) division have signed up to face each other. Juan Manuel Marquez will take on Juan Diaz will fight for Marquez's title Feb. 28 on HBO in Diaz's hometown of Houston. This bout has all the makings of an instant classic. Both are crowd-pleasing fighters, who throw plenty of punches. Marquez (49-4-1, 36 KOs), who is 35, has held titles in three weight classes and will defend his lightweight title for the first time since knocking out Joel Casamayor in the 11th round Sept. 13 in his first action at 135 pounds. Diaz (34-1, 17 KOs), who is 25, had three belts before losing them to Nate Campbell in March for the only loss of his career, but bounced back against Michael Katsidis for a decision victory Sept. 6. The winner of this fight could be considered the top 135-pound boxer in the world and set up huge paydays in the future, which could include a move to 140 pounds to take on Ricky Hatton, Manny Pacquiao or possibly Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Taking all challengers
Mon, November 24, 2008 @ 7:32PM
North Carolina might be the team to beat in college basketball this season, but that doesn't always translate to a National Championship. With a host of talent nipping at their heels, UNC will have to keep pace just to keep the pack from catching up. The biggest threat to the Tar Heels title hopes is Pittsburgh. Jamie Dixon's squad has all the makings of a championship spoiler. With three players scoring in double-figures - DeJuan Blair, Levance Fields and Sam Young - the Panthers could find themselves in the Final Four this year as long as a tough Big East schedule doesn't get them first. Next up to make a run at the title are the UCLA Bruins. The LA team has had a slow start to the season, losing to Michigan 55-52 and dropping to No. 13, but an early season setback will be all but forgotten once tournament time rolls around. And since the third time wasn't the charm for Darren Collison and Co.

My tech year in review
Wed, December 31, 2008 @ 11:43AM
It's hard to imagine I'd have over 130 blog postings when we switched to our new web site in Spring. It's been a fun adventure and I do enjoy talking tech and sharing a blog whether it's from the office, in the comfort of my home or carefully typing away from my iPhone. I went to the page where it shows all of the blog entries and went down the list to pick some of my favorite ones. I wasn't looking for the blog that was most important or had the most views. I searched for ones that were a lot of fun to write or, what I thought, was an interesting find. Looking back, it seems the ones I remember the most are the stories about my experiences. I wished I lived near a tech metropolis or had the funds to travel to the numerous tech conferences and shows. So the "experiences" are quite slim and not on a grand scale, but fun nevertheless. I also like the ones where I came across a product or web site, found it interesting then and still use it today.

Relax
Mon, December 15, 2008 @ 4:36PM
My last few vacation days need to be used up, so I will be out of the office for several days this week. Despite my absence, the news goes on and events will get coverage. I am not irreplaceable, by no means. But when I do return from vacation, I always feel one or two steps behind. I have to read the paper to see what I missed, retrieve my voice mail messages to see what's happening next and look through the stack of notes and e-mails sent my way. I can normally get back into the swing of things quite quickly, but I still feel a little bit in the dark. So, I have a message for East Liverpool – don't do anything while I'm gone the rest of this week. No crime, no drama, no fires, no crazy antics are allowed. That way, I won't feel out of step, and you will be much safer. It's a win-win situation.

Toy Story
Tue, January 6, 2009 @ 4:49PM
It's a new year and you know what they say ... out with the old, in with the new. I have a little problem with that, however. I know it will be a shock to hear this but Zach is a little spoiled. Amazing, right? Let's just say for Christmas he pretty much got everything on his list to Santa. The dilemma? His birthday is in a couple of weeks ... so what do I get him? You would think that I would learn by now to not buy so much for Christmas ... but I can't help it. Plus, it's not just me that spoils him ... I won't name any names, you know who you are. I guess I went off the subject there a little. The thing is I need to make room for his new toys. How do I decide what toys to get rid of? It never fails when I think he has grown out of a toy I think, ok, there's one I can throw out. Then a couple days later he starts playing with it again for a day or two.
