EAST LIVERPOOL — A winter weather advisory alert for Columbiana County have shifted the alert eyes of the area’s road crews to the radio, television, Internet and news updates regarding possible snow accumulation in the Ohio Valley region.
The alert was issued Thursday afternoon and remains in effect until 6 p.m. today, according to The National Weather Service. According to the advisory, snow accumulation of up to six inches of snow is expected, in some isolated areas, and generally the county can have about 2-4 inches of snow by Friday evening.

Abraham stops Marquez

The "other" middleweight champion (other than Kelly Pavlik), Arthur Abraham kept his record perfect Saturday by defeating Raul Marquez by technical knockout in six rounds. Abraham (28-0, 22 KOs), the IBF middleweight title holder, dominated the action and cut Marquez's (41-4-1, 29 KOs) right eye forcing his corner to stop the fight. Now a matchup with Pavlik is becoming even more enticing. Abraham has the IBF belt, Pavlik has the WBO and WBC belts. The WBA belt is held by Felix Sturm, who Abraham called out after the fight. "I say here in front of 10,000 I am ready to box (Sturm)," Abraham said. "I can't say anything else." If Abraham can capture the WBA belt, a bout with Pavlik would once-and-for-all crown a true, undisputed middlweight king. First Pavlik must get by Marco Antonio Rubio, but barring a major upset, a true middleweight classic seems to be in the making. Until next time, I'm throwing in the towel.

How the mighty have fallen

How far Michigan has fallen. After losing to Appalachian State in the 2007 season opener, and suffering three more losses to end out the season, it was evident: Lloyd Carr had to go. Even though he rebounded with a 9-4 record, it was his time. But the departure of the old ball coach hasnát helped things. After stealing Rich Rodriguez away from West Virginia, in what seemed like the middle of the night, the Wolverines have fallen on even harder times. The team is in the midst of its first eight-loss season in the school's 129-year history. With losses to teams the likes of Toledo and Utah it doesn't seem like Rodriguez is all he's cracked up to be. Michigan supports will claim that he doesn't have his players yet so his system isn't running with a full head of steam. But whatever happened to good old fashioned coaching? He did lose players to transfer, such as quarterback Ryan Mallett, but Steven Threat is no slouch.

Storming over the iPhone?

All those Blackberry (aka Crack-berry) users who want a slice of the iPhone can now have that dream machine in the palm of their hands. The Blackberry Storm was released to the US market and this phone might be the strongest iPhone competitor yet. The smartphone is available on Verizon and is the first touch-screen Blackberry to hit the US market. The price is right with the iPhone at $200 after a $50 rebate. The Blackberry is the corporate phone while the iPhone hits a broader market with its plethora of games and applications. The Storm hopes to take advantage of the problems that the iPhone has given users. Some people have complained that the on-screen keyboard is not as efficient as the button keyboards on most smartphones. The new Blackberry device uses a hybrid of the two. It does have an on-screen keyboard, but the screen depresses ever-so-slightly, giving typers the feel of pressing an actual button.

Cats and Dogs

I have nothing against cats, but I am more of a dog owner than a cat dude. Cats are unpredictable. Cats have claws. Cats break all the rules. For example, an animal should not have rights to more than one unique sound. A dog barks. A cow moos. A sheep goes “baa.” This finally brings me to my point, other than the fact that my See 'n Say has finally paid dividends. A cat has provenance over two sounds. They've cornered the animal sound market on “meow” and “purr.” It's not right. So imagine my surprise, and now yours, when I became the owner of a cat. Well, not so much an owner because a cat allows no ownership. I am merely a caretaker for the cat. The little kitty was inside a storage building behind my house and followed me around for several days. I fed the kitty some bologna. Her name is Penny, and she got her name because she likes to chase pennies around on the kitchen floor.

How a three-year-old picks up chicks

Soccer season has ended and I learned a little about Zachary this fall. I will say he had fun, enjoyed going and learned a little about the game. For example, he knows no hands in soccer and can dribble the ball. I didn’t realize “team parent” meant part time assistant coach. I was a little freaked out the day the coach called to say she wasn’t going to make it to practice and wanted to know if I could take over. I was relieved, however, when her 12-year-old son was there. He coached, I was more of a child wrangler. I learned Zach likes the girls. He would go and practice with the other teams so he could go and flirt with the girls. On picture day, they were all standing around waiting for pictures. I looked over and there was Zach standing with two girls (from another team) all with their arms around each other … yep I going to be in trouble in about 13 years. So they had a couple of scrimmages and it was really cute.
