"Slappy Joe" says he's done
Thu, August 21, 2008 @ 1:59AM
Joe Calzaghe says he's hanging up his gloves. The super middleweight and light heavyweight champion of the world said he will retire after his Nov. 8 showdown at Madison Square Garden with Roy Jones Jr. The 36-year-old Wales native is undefeated in his 45 professional fights with 32 knockoust to his credit. "At the moment, I'm definitely going to retire," Calzaghe told ESPN.com recently. "As long as I win and I win in style, then it will be my last fight. I've achieved everything I can in boxing, I'm 36 years old and I don't want to keep on fighting. I love boxing and I love what the sport has given me, but I want to retire undefeated." That's all well and good, but Kelly Pavlik should be Joe's last fight. If Calzaghe beats Jones and Pavlik beats Hopkins, there will be no bigger fight on the planet that could be made. What does Joe think? "It's like deja vu," Calzaghe said.

Leaving on a jet plane
Wed, July 30, 2008 @ 11:07PM
The latest quandary to present itself to the assemblage of NBA hoopsters doesn't involve picking between Nike or Adidas, Gatorade or Vitamin Water or to high sock or not high sock. This involved money. But not the kind we're used to. If the axiom that money talks is accurate than the Euro must be screaming at the top of its lungs at the moment. The lure of tax free cash provided by Europe's top hoops squads has begun to beckon the league's groundlings to it's streamlined courts. The biggest name to jump the pond is the Atlanta Hawks' Josh Childress. Childress - the No. 6 overall pick out of Stanford in 2004 - left Hotlanta for Greek club Olympiakos and a three-year, $20 million dollar deal. Though he will be competing against inferior talent, in an inferior league, Childress will bank nearly double what he was offered to stay with the Hawks. Generally American fans can't take the idea that anyone would leave a U.S. league to play overseas in anything other than soccer.

The email snooze button
Wed, August 27, 2008 @ 8:32PM
How many times do you hit the snooze button in the morning? Well, if you're the king of the snooze button (or a lowly pawn), then you might want to check out HitMeLater. It's a very simple concept. I'm not sure how useful to all, but it's simple. Basically, you forward an email message to 24@hitmelater.com and the site will re-send (or, I guess, forward you back) the message in 24 hours. Boom! That email that was awaiting your reading Thursday morning is back again on Friday - and it's brand spanking new and unread. If you're bad about reading an email and going back to it once it has already been read, then this service has its merits. Sometimes, I tell myself, "I'll get back to the message later when I have time." But that message only gets buried and buried under newer emails. And it gets buried and buried in my memory as well. So this service can come in handy.

Drugs, please
Mon, August 18, 2008 @ 3:31AM
Ouch. Ladies and gentlemen of the blogosphere, I have an announcement to make. On August 2, 2008, at exactly 12:23 p.m., I gave birth to a four-micron kidney stone. Please feel free to send your congratulations. I learned something very important about myself on Thursday, July 31, 2008. I am a wimp. The day started like any other. I got up at 10 a.m. that morning with, what I thought at the time, a little stiffness in my back along the right side. Being the trooper that I am, I went to work, but something did not feel quite right. At about 1 p.m., I was starting to hallucinate. The pain … My Goodness … The pain started to become more acute. I normally consider myself a tough guy, but I was no match. Pain that severe is nothing I’ve ever experienced before.

Me, a soccer mom?
Tue, August 19, 2008 @ 11:05PM
Well, I did something silly the other day ... signed Zach up for soccer. I was told that an area soccer league has teams for three-year old children. I thought, that might be entertaining. I asked the doctor if it was ok for Zach to play soccer with his scoliosis. The doctor said the best thing for him is to keep him as active as possible. Then I asked Zach if he wanted to learn how to play soccer and he was very excited about it. So, we signed up. I bought him a ball and the first night we "practiced" all he wanted to do was watch it roll down the hill and, of course, he wanted to use his hands. It became a game that he would pick it up and wait for me to tell him he can't use his hands in soccer. However, now he is getting the idea and enjoys kicking the ball ... especially inside our tiny apartment. Now I'm not expecting him to be the next (insert famous soccer player here), I just want him to have fun and perhaps learn a little about the game.
