Cleanup of roadway appreciated

We must admit, it was great to see a crew of workers clearing weeds along the median strip of Routes 30/39 the last couple days.

It was well overdue quite honestly.

We’ve heard about the city’s lack of financing to regularly clean this high-traffic artery into the downtown. There’s, in fact, been debate among city leadership about de-annexing the property back to the state – thus also eliminating the maintenance responsibility. But it’s our understanding that means East Liverpool also losses money accorded it from the state.

Perhaps the cleaning has been on the books for some time and this was the first opportunity to begin the upkeep? We don’t know.

Perhaps city leaders heard the cry from area residents – both via letters to the editor and submission to our “thanks and spanks” section? We don’t know.

Maybe it was learning of city residents, such as Joan Stowers, paying $100 out of her own pocket to have an overgrowth of ivy cleared along the walking bridge in the West End? Again, we don’t know.

Or perhaps it’s the result of seeing other dedicated volunteers who keep certain sections of the city tidy- two examples being Richard K. Wolf, who maintains the area near the “Welcome” sign along West Eighth Street, and the East Liverpool-Calcutta Garden Club, whose members have transformed the area along the Jackson Street overpass.

We don’t have the answer.

But, what we do now have is a section of highway that is cleaner looking today than it was yesterday. And for that, we thank the city.
