Advantages to inland plants

For years, those in the energy industry viewed the Gulf Coast as a natural location for manufacturing and processing plants linked to their business. Some gas from our area is piped south to the Gulf, for that reason.

But events during the past few weeks — specifically, two major hurricanes — are a reminder that there are advantages to manufacturing at inland locations.

Now, we have enormous deposits of gas, and some oil, right under our feet in the Ohio Valley. So we have the resources and, as they say, location, location, location going for us.

No one likes to benefit from others’ misfortune. Still, in marketing our region for energy-related development, it may be reasonable to point out that there is no record of an Ohio Valley plant ever being shut down by a hurricane.
