Social workers make life better

Social workers are in the community every day helping the less fortunate and those in need.

March is National Professional Social Work Month and the theme this year is “Social Workers Stand Up.”

There are more than 600,000 social workers across the country who have dedicated their lives to weaving society’s safety net. They aren’t in it for the money, since their income is generally low.

Social workers help people of every age. Their work ranges from protecting children to helping the elderly.

Social workers contribute at all levels of society, working with individuals, families, schools, universities, nonprofit agencies, corporations, hospitals and government offices to mediate conflict, foster positive relationships and create hope and opportunity for people in need, according to the National Association of Social Workers.

Social workers make a difference in the day-to-day lives of millions of Americans by helping to build, support and empower positive family and community relationships.

For example, they work in schools helping students overcome obstacles to their education; they work in hospitals helping patients navigate paths to recovery; and they work in agencies and organizations helping protect vulnerable children and adults from abuse and neglect.

They confront some of the most challenging issues facing individuals, families, communities and society and forge solutions that help people reach their full potential, but they rarely get thanks. Many people expect and demand the services of social workers.

Social workers probably receive more training than any other profession. Many hold master’s degrees. These workers are constantly updated on the latest research and training in their fields. Their work is based on evidence-based research. They are professional in every way.

Social workers today are burdened with the drug dependency and mental health issues facing a growing segment of society, especially here.

Social workers network with each other, trying to coordinate services so agencies can pool resources.

Many young people today are burdened with the pressure to choose a career. Social work is a good choice because their work will always be in demand.

Social work is one of the fastest growing professions in the country.

Take the time to thank a social worker for the help and compassion they provide on a daily basis.
