Motorists reminded to be aware of children, buses

Many public school systems are beginning classes earlier than in the past, to ensure “snow days” later on do not cut into the minimum numbers of classroom days required for students. Students, parents and educators have to adjust to the new schedules.

Motorists do, too. When classes are in session, drivers should be paying special attention to children who, walking to or from school, engage in dangerous behavior such as darting out onto streets in front of traffic.

Especially important is remembering that after several weeks in which school buses were not encountered on local streets and roads, they are back. Be aware of that before, perhaps late for work, you speed through a curve with a school bus stop on the other side.

Police and sheriff’s deputies will be paying special attention to students’ safety during the next few weeks – and should come down hard on motorists who fail to obey laws meant to keep the kids safe.
