Support area’s Memorial Day activities

We urge area residents to get out and support the area’s Memorial Day services.

Memorial Day didn’t evolve as a family picnic holiday. Memorial Day is dedicated to those brave men and women who died while serving in the Armed Forces, protecting our freedoms – many of whom called our section of the world home.

Sure, many of us have family plans, but let’s also participate by attending one of the following events:

In Wellsville, events begin at 9 a.m. Monday at Fourth Street Memorial Park. Following a small program, a parade will proceed to Spring Hill Cemetery where the lighting of the memorial flame takes place.

In East Liverpool, a service takes place at 10 a.m. Monday at the Broadway Wharf. The parade begins at 11 a.m. through the downtown streets. A program on the steps of City Hall takes place immediately following the parade.

In Chester, a ceremony takes place at 10 a.m. Monday at Post 121.

The annual Salineville Memorial Day parade begins at 9 a.m. Monday.

And today, events go on all day – beginning with a flag raising at 9:30 a.m. at Calcutta Community Park. All other activities take place at Calcutta Square. And the fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m.

Remember, while traveling – and it’s projected that many of you will will be on our roadways for at least a 50-mile trek – please do so cautiously.

And finally, keep the fireworks to the professionals.

Let’s make this a safe holiday.
