Dr. Manolo P. ‘Nolie’ Mapa

CHESTER, W.Va. — Dr. Manolo P. “Nolie” Mapa, 74, of Chester, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

He was born July 20, 1943, in Manila, Philippines, the son of the late Pedro and Violeta (Pangulayan) Mapa. In addition to his parents, Nolie was preceded in death by his sister, Alicia Mapa Baksh, and his brother, Renato Mapa.

Dr. Mapa graduated from Mapa High School in 1959, and continued his education at the University of Santo Tomas, where he graduated with his undergraduate degree in 1962, and from medical school in 1967. Nolie was a Doctor of Internal Medicine and owned his practice in East Liverpool, until his retirement in 2017. During his years of practicing medicine, Dr. Mapa was also a fellow of the American College of Physicians, served as the medical executive staff officer for many years at East Liverpool City Hospital, where he was affectionately known as “Papa Mapa,” was a member of the Columbiana County Medical Society, and was a part of the University of Santo Tomas Class of 1967 Alumni Foundation. Dr. Mapa was presented the East Liverpool City Hospital’s Physician of the Year Award in 1992. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish.

Survivors include his wife, Dr. Helouise (Culanculan) Mapa, whom he married Dec. 24, 1968; two daughters: Mimi Mapa of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Marissa Mapa and her husband, Jason Barfield, of Columbus, Ohio; two sons: Michael Mapa and his wife, Rita, of Orlando, Fla., and Manolo “Moi” Mapa Jr. of Chester, W.Va.; and two brothers: Efren Mapa of Ramsey, N.J., and Jaime Mapa of Jersey City, N.J. Also surviving are three grandchildren: Matthew and Reyna Mapa, and Brooklyn Mapa Barfield.

A Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 30, 2017, at the Holy Trinity Parish at St. Aloysius Church with Rev. Bernard Gaeta and Rev. Manny Gelido presiding.

Burial will follow in Columbiana County Memorial Park.

Friends may call from 1-5 p.m. Sunday at the Roberts Funeral Home, 631 Main St. in Wellsville.
