Michael Lee Harty, 57

WELLSVILLE — Michael Lee Harty, 57, of Wellsville, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, at his home following a five month illness.

He was born March 3, 1960, in Decatur, Ill., the son of John (Betty Jean) Harty of Muncie, Ind. and the late Claudette (Carpenter) Anderson.

Mike graduated from Baker High School in Columbus, Ga., in 1977, and from Troy State University in Phoenix City, Ala., with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. He retired as a sergeant from the Atlanta Police Department in 2011, after serving 28 years with the force. After moving to Wellsville, Mike was a substitute internal suspension teacher for the Wellsville School District for two years before joining the Lisbon Police Department and Columbiana County Drug Task Force as a detective in 2013. He was a member of the FOP Beaver Creek North Lodge 178 and the Wellsville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Karenna (Tice) Harty, whom he married Oct. 6, 1990; two daughters: Kristen Harty of Wellsville and Kaleigh Harty and future son-in-law, Chris Spooner, of Cumming, Ga.; seven siblings: Johnnie Harty of Georgia, and Ronnie Harty, Betty “Sis” Roberts, Willie Harty, Lindy Smeltzer, Steve Harty and his wife, Phyllis, and Shawn Harty, all of Muncie, Ind. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Michael, Katie, Ryan, Kolton, and Karenna; as well as a host of Blue Line family.

The funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Roberts Funeral Home with the Fraternal Order of Police and Pastor Kenneth Maylone of the Wellsville United Methodist Church officiating.
