James E. Swearingen, 90

CHESTER — James E. Swearingen, 90, of Chester, passed peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2016, at the Valley Hospice Care Center North at Trinity West Hospital, Steubenville.

Born March 31, 1926, at Hollidays Cove, near Weirton, Jim was a son of the late Ennis B. and Gladys McKee Swearingen.

A retired construction superintendent, he retired in 1982 from Weirton Steel’s WSX engineering department. He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Chester where he was a former trustee.

Jim was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, where he served with the 18th AAA battalion during WWII. He served in the South Pacific from August 1944 until March of 1946. He was a member of the VFW Post 6450 and American Legion Post 121 in Chester, and New Cumberland Masonic Lodge 22. A 32nd degree Mason, he belonged to the Scottish Rite and Osiris Temple.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by two brothers, Warren and Tom Swearingen.

On Aug. 10, 1947, he married his wife Dorothy M. Pugh Swearingen and she survives at home. Also he leaves two children, Betsy Ann Ford and husband Brad of Media, Pa.; and Lee B. Swearingen and wife Terri of Chester; two sisters, Eva Ramsey of Beaver, Pa., and Donna Strapazzon of Burgettstown, Pa.; and five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Rev. Katrina Lewis of the church will celebrate Jim’s life at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester and he will be laid to rest at Mill Creek Hill Cemetery in Georgetown. In honoring the family’s wishes, all services will be private.
