Nelle Buchanan Landers, 81
HOOKSTOWN, Pa. -Nelle Buchanan Landers, age 81, died peacefully in her sleep on April 11, 2014. Born Sept. 11, 1932 in Aliquippa, she was the daughter of the late James B. and Elizabeth “Bess” Leeper Buchanan. On Dec. 27, 1952 she married William “Bill” Landers, who preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters, Eileen Mathews and husband Gary, and SuAnn Stibitz and husband Kevin; a son, Ben Landers and wife Heather; six grandchildren; and a brother, Bob, of Wash. She was predeceased by a brother, Jim, of Tenn. and infant sister, Ruth.
Nelle grew up in Hookstown and lived in the area for most of her life, for the last forty years on her beloved farm on Ridge Rd. She graduated from Hopewell High School and the Pittsburgh School of Business. As a young woman, she worked for two years for J&L Steel, and then for over thirty years as both the secretary and organist of Mill Creek Church and as school bus driver for South Side Garage.
Her life outside her family was devoted to the activities of Mill Creek Church and the Hookstown Grange; she was a member of both organizations for over 70 years. She loved farming alongside Bill, quilting, making many gift quilts over the years; gardening and making jellies and candy to enter in the Hookstown Fair every summer. She also especially looked forward to visiting with her many relatives when she hosted the annual Kerr-Leeper reunion.
Viewing will be held Friday, April 18, from 6-8 p.m. at Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester, WV. Additional viewing and funeral service will take place Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m., followed by interment at Mill Creek Cemetery. Guests are invited to join the family for fellowship at Mill Creek Church immediately after the burial, including a buffet provided by The Mill Creek Women’s Association.
