Diana L. Szymanek, 61

NEW CUMBERLAND-Diana L. Szymanek, 61 passed away on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at the Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville following a four year battle with a rare blood cancer.

Diana was born on Aug. 12, 1952 in New Brighton, Pa., to the late Claude J. and Mary Margaret Jones Orlo.

Diana’s life revolved around her family, especially her grandson Chase Szymanek. When not working at her job at Hancock County Savings Bank in Chester she could be found sewing, quilting and crocheting. She loved gardening around her home and walking in Tomlinson Run State Park which was just out her back door.

She graduated from Beaver High School in Beaver and received her associate degree in business from Geneva College in Beaver Falls.

Always known to help others, Diana had been associated with the Hancock County Museum in New Cumberland and she was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chester.

In addition to her parents, her brother-in-law, Dave Adler preceded her in death.

On Feb. 28, 1976 she married James Szymanek who survives at home. Together they had two children, Chris Szymanek, who with his wife Jenn and Diana’s special grandson Chase live in Lowell, N.C., and her daughter Elaine Szymanek of New Cumberland. Diana also leaves her sister, Theresa Adler of Chippewa, and two brothers, Joe Orlo and wife Dottie of East Liverpool, and Ed Orlo and wife Cheryl of Beaver, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Rev. Father Eric Antwi will preside for a Mass of Christian Funeral on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chester. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester where Father Antwi will preside for a Liturgy of the Word service at 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Mayo Clinic for cancer research.
