William J. Smith, Sr., 86

CALCUTTA-William J. Smith, Sr. age 86, of Calcutta, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at the Valley Hospice Care Center in Steubenville, Ohio after a brief illness.

Mr. Smith was born in East Liverpool on July 1, 1927, he was the son of the late William J. Smith and Vera (Hargreaves) Smith Henricks and had lived his entire life in this area.

He was a graduate of East Liverpool High School and had been employed as a Millwright with the former Crucible Steel Mill, retiring in 1982 after 36 years. Mr. Smith was a Veteran serving with the U.S. Navy and enjoyed playing golf at the Beaver Creek Par Three where he had19 hole in ones, he was also an avid gardener.

He was predeceased by his wife, Betty J. (Williams) Smith, in 2009. They were married on Feb. 14, 1949.

Mr. Smith was survived by one son, William J. Smith Jr. and his wife, Elaine, of Calcutta; three daughters, Kathy S. Walters and her companion, George Veon, of Columbiana, Cindy Curran of Calcutta and Debbie Barrett and her husband, Robert, also of Calcutta. Eight grandchildren, Jayson, Kelly, James, Shane, Amber, Michael, Michelle, and Brittany also survived, as well as 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and his lifelong friend, Poncho.

Services will be held at the Calcutta Chapel of the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Homes on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Paul Sturm officiating. Burial will follow in the United Presbyterian Cemetery of Calcutta.

Family will receive friends at the Calcutta Funeral Home prior to the service on Thursday from 11:30 a.m. up until time of services.
