John R. “Zeke” Zielinsky, 64
WEIRTON – John R. “Zeke” Zielinsky, 64, of Weirton passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014 at the Weirton Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born June 23, 1949 in New Cumberland, a son of the late Walter and Walda (Zumer) Zielinsky. He was preceded in death by his son Matthew on Jan. 18, 2004. He was Catholic by faith.
John worked at the former Weirton Steel Corporation as a roller on the No. 2 Weirlite Mill in the Tin Mill. He also served as union steward for a number of years. He was forced to retire, with a disability, after an automobile accident severely injured his leg.
John graduated from Oak Glen High School where he excelled in football, basketball and track. He later attended Fairmont State College under a track scholarship where he ultimately set several state track records.
John loved all type of sports but was always ready to give an opinion on basketball and football whether college or professional. His all time favorite sport was watching or, in most cases, playing the horses at Mountaineer. John was an avid fan for a number of years until the difficulty of getting around became a problem.
Surviving are two brothers Thomas (Patricia) of Weirton and Donald (Robin) of East Liverpool, Ohio; a stepson, Aaron Martin of Wheeling and niece Amy Lee (David) Starr of Knoxville, Tenn.
At John’s request there will be no viewing and services will be left to the family and the Turley Funeral Home in New Cumberland. Interment will be in the New Cumberland Cemetery.
The family would like to express thanks and appreciation to all the many doctors and nurses at Weirton Medical Center and Acuity Specialty Hospital for their professional services in helping attend to John’s needs over the last several weeks.
