Daniel L. Williams, 59

EAST LIVERPOOL – East Liverpool resident Daniel Lee “Dan” Williams passed away at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh from complications following heart transplant surgery one month ago. Dan was surrounded at the time of his death by his devoted family who had supported him without fail throughout his illness.

He was born on Dec. 26, 1954, in East Liverpool, a son of Tom and Kate Maltarich Williams of East Liverpool. Dan was raised here and was a 1973 graduate of East Liverpool High School.

Dan began working at the former McIntosh-Hemphill until its closing, and then served with the U.S. Navy on the USS Dewert. Following his service time, he became associated with the Federal Bureau of Prisons as an Inmate Systems Manager, last working at the FCI McKean prison in Bradford, Pa. Upon his retirement in 1993, Dan returned to East Liverpool, where he remained.

On Dec. 26, 1987, he married the former Mary Lynn Ash of East Liverpool. Together, they took great joy in raising their son, Zach, and were extremely involved in his activities, especially the East Liverpool and Beaver Local soccer programs. Dan had been a coach and was Zach’s biggest supporter. He was currently a member of the Elks Lodge No. 258 and was a past member of the Chester Lions Club. He loved hunting, fishing, Jimmy Buffett and THE Ohio State University Buckeyes, but nothing compared to his love of time spent with family.

His loving wife, Mary, survives him at home, along with his son, Zach, who is currently a student at La Roche College. In addition to his parents, Dan also leaves behind a sister, Susie (Mike) Jackson, of Cortland, Ohio; and a brother, Mike Williams of East Liverpool. His in-laws, Les and Joan Ash of East Liverpool, and sisters-in-law Kathy Mattern of Wellsville and Lori (Steve) Conley of East Liverpool, also survive, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Dan was also sustained by a host of loving friends who began a support group, “Dan’s Bravehearts.” They rallied around him throughout the best and worst of times, and were considered by him to be family.

“Nothing is more honorable than a grateful heart.”

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Friday, where the family will be present from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m.

Services will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with Dr. Robert B. Sylvies officiating. Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery.
