Betty Brookes McKernan, 93
EAST LIVERPOOL – Betty Brookes McKernan, 93, passed peacefully from this life into the next, at 4:10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, with her daughter at her side. Betty, who had only been ill a short while, died in the home where she had resided for 65 years, just 500 yards from the home in which she was born.
She was a daughter of the late Charles R. and Elsa Shurte Brookes, born on March 8, 1920 in East Liverpool.
A 1937 graduate of East Liverpool High School, Betty remained a proud alumnus and enjoyed attending the Olde Guard luncheon each summer.
In the 1940’s, she had worked at the former New System Bakery, City Market, and was the first female newspaper carrier for the Evening Review. Betty later worked at Pearl’s Market, Reark’s Cigar Store, and also Birch’s Do-It Center.
She had belonged to the former Calvary Methodist Church.
It was well known by those closest to her that she loved playing BINGO, prompting her grandchildren to affectionately refer to her as “Grandma Bingo”.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Hugh “Laddie” McKernan, Jr., who died on May 10, 1975.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Evans and her husband, Harvey “Ted” Evans, of Wellsville, and a son, Richard McKernan, of Ohio. Also surviving is a granddaughter, Sherry Wellmer, of Gahanna, Ohio, and four step-grandchildren: Malynda Linko (Jonathan); Doug Evans (April); Todd Evans (Katie); Andrew Evans (Brea). A great-grandson, Phillip Wellmer, survives as well as three step-great-grandchildren, Jackson Linko, Evan Linko and Kylee Evans, and a niece and nephews who were special to her.
Also surviving is a brother, Charles R. “Chick” Brookes and his wife, Maxine, of East Liverpool, and a sister, Marian Bowyer, also of East Liverpool. Preceding her in death was a sister, JoAnne Birch, as well as a great-grandson, Richard Wellmer.
Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Saturday, where the family will be present from 3 to 8 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor John Smith officiating, followed by a continued time of fellowship at the Dawson Family Center. Burial will take place at Columbiana County Memorial Park.
